A current member of the Metropolitan Police has been accused of committing six acts of rape following an incident where a woman was reportedly forced into a vehicle.

PC Cliff Mitchell, 23, is also charged with one count of making threats to kill and one count of breaching a non-molestation order.

The officer, who is a member of the West Area Basic Command Unit, was formally charged earlier today.

Yesterday, an inquiry took place following an incident where a woman in a state of distress informed authorities that she had been assaulted within a residence and subsequently coerced into a vehicle.

PC Mitchell, who has now been suspended, will appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in the next few hours.

The officer – who is attached to the West Area Basic Command Unit – was charged today

Today, charges were filed against the officer who is affiliated with the West Area Basic Command Unit.

The probe was sparked when police were called at 1.50pm yesterday by a member of the public who had found a woman in distress in Hackbridge.

They were told she had been attacked inside a residential property by a man who subsequently forced her into a car. They were known to one another.

Urgent enquiries were carried out and it was established that the suspect was a serving Met officer.

He was off-duty when the incident occurred or when he was arrested.

PC Mitchell has been suspended from duty and a referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct

PC Mitchell has been placed on suspension and a report has been submitted to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The officer’s duty has been temporarily halted and a report has been submitted to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy said: ‘These are horrific allegations and the victim is being supported by specially trained officers.

The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards is currently conducting an investigation. The officers involved are skilled detectives who specialize in investigating cases of domestic abuse and sexual offenses.

‘This is an active investigation and enquiries continue at pace.’

The apprehension of a currently employed law enforcement officer under suspicion of such grave crimes is highly worrisome, and I acknowledge that it will undoubtedly raise significant alarm within the communities of London. I empathize with those worries and have promptly reported the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
