Mark Hemingway, a conservative writer, wrote an essay expressing his criticism towards Taylor Swift’s music, viewing it as an indication of societal deterioration.
Swift, 33, took over the NFL on Sunday when she attended her new beau Travis Kelce’s football game in Kansas city. 24.3 million viewers tuned in to watch with her.
In his essay for The Federalist, Hemingway, a book editor for the publication, wrote that Swift’s lyrics are ‘Me Music’ and promote a culture of self-obsession.
He wrote that it is difficult to determine whether the cultural representation of millennial females, who are constantly portrayed as romantically troubled, became popular first or if it was her popularity that led to this lyrical obsession.

Hemingway contended that the rise in popularity of Miss. Americana signifies a cultural change in music, shifting from songs addressing communal concerns to those centered around individualism.
The singer-songwriter is expected to earn a staggering $2.2 billion from ticket sales in North America alone for her Eras Tour.

‘Her music sucks: It’s utterly defined by self-obsession rather than introspection. Where other artists will occasionally do a Christmas album, it seems like every Taylor Swift album is a Festivus record devoted to the airing of grievances and feats of artistic strength.’
In 2007, Taylor Swift released a Christmas album called The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection, which included two original songs: “Christmases When You Were Mine” and “Christmas Must Be Something More.” In 2021, she released another original song titled “Christmas Tree Farm.”
Hemingway repeatedly emphasizes that her songs revolve around the themes of ending relationships and past romances, and he also criticizes certain lyrics for being overly straightforward.
“He wrote that there is another song on her most recent album criticizing her well-known former partner, John Mayer. This song comes after her widely known breakup song, Dear John, which was released in 2010. It is common knowledge that Mayer had a reputation as a womanizer even before he dated her, and this happened 14 years ago.”

Hemingway suggests that the definition of good music has been lowered by audiences, resulting in the widespread popularity of the Bad Blood hitmaker.
Hemingway stated that there comes a time when we must acknowledge the vast difference between middlebrow entertainment and the lowest level of popular music, even if we accept the limitations of the genre.
‘Our need for shared artistic connection cannot be allowed to overwhelm a duty to also collectively seek out music that takes us places and challenges us with insights into the human condition, revelations about ourselves we didn’t know (or maybe didn’t want to know), and otherwise produces insights into the problems of others.’
Swift’s The Eras Tour is shattering records and is projected to a gross of $2.2 billion in North American ticket sales alone. Her movie release of the tour is predicted to open at $100 million in ticket sales.
He recognized that audiences can relate to Swift’s songs.
While it is true that young men often mistreat young women, it is acceptable for this to be a common theme in pop songs. However, there should be boundaries in place.
He claimed that in the current divided society with minimal common culture, individuals will hold onto anything that stands out, but it doesn’t have to be analyzed from a political perspective.
After receiving an overwhelming response for the Eras Tour film screenings, Swift revealed that the film will be shown globally.

He discussed the New York Times’ portrayal of Swift and referred to a remarkable essay in the New Yorker regarding the experience of listening to Swift in prison. He also expressed disapproval towards certain aspects of the coverage.
I want to clarify that I am not hostile or disconnected to the point where I fail to understand the significant aspects of her appeal. I believe she is worth acknowledging because there is something about Swift that strikes a chord with the American audience. However, I truly question whether her popularity truly reflects her talent.
Hemingway acknowledges that it is difficult to resist Swift, but his concern lies in the lack of originality he finds in her music.
I admit that she excels in what she does to the point where it’s difficult to resist her in certain situations. If listening to a few minutes of Swift occasionally brings you joy, I won’t object to that.
Next month, the Eras Tour concert film, which was successful in America, will be premiered in the UK and Europe, as announced by Tuesday Swift.
After a disagreement with her previous record label, Big Machine Records, regarding the ownership of the masters, she has been recreating her previous albums. The upcoming re-release will be her 1989 album.
