‘The costume for the play was enormous, I knew I wasn’t well then but I’d not been well for so long.

The reason I visited the doctor and underwent a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test was due to the presence of blood in my urine.

Jake was initially given radiotherapy treatment, but his treatment plan was later switched to palliative care.

Can you provide a definition of prostate cancer?

What is the number of fatalities caused by it?

In Britain, over 11,800 men lose their lives to this disease annually, equivalent to one death every 45 minutes. In comparison, approximately 11,400 women die from breast cancer.

In Britain, prostate cancer ranks third in terms of mortality, following lung and bowel cancer.

Each year, 26,000 men in the United States lose their lives to this illness.

However, it is funded with less than half of the research funding allocated to breast cancer, and advancements in treatment for this disease are at least ten years behind.

What is the annual number of men diagnosed?

In the UK, over 52,300 men receive a prostate cancer diagnosis annually, which averages to more than 140 cases per day.

How rapidly does it progress?

According to the NHS, prostate cancer typically progresses at a slow pace, which means that individuals may not exhibit any symptoms for several years.

If the cancer is in its early stages and not producing symptoms, a strategy of “watchful waiting” or “active surveillance” might be chosen.

If the disease is treated early on, certain patients have the potential to be cured.

If the diagnosis occurs at a later stage, when the condition has spread, it becomes incurable and the focus of treatment shifts to alleviating symptoms.

Many men avoid getting diagnosed due to the potential negative effects of treatment, such as erectile dysfunction.

Tests and treatment

Tests for prostate cancer are haphazard, with accurate tools only just beginning to emerge.

Due to their longstanding inaccuracy, there is currently no existing national program for prostate screening.

It is challenging for doctors to differentiate between aggressive and less severe tumors, which complicates the decision-making process for treatment.

Men who are 50 years old or older can undergo a blood test called ‘PSA’ to provide doctors with a general indication of their potential risk.

However, it is not dependable. Patients who receive a positive outcome typically undergo a biopsy, which is also not completely reliable.

The exact cause of prostate cancer remains uncertain to scientists, however, they have identified age, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle as known factors that increase the risk.
