If you want to avoid appearing tacky, here are the places you should avoid visiting for a holiday.

Do you aim to be perceived as a well-informed traveler who discovers sophisticated, trendy, or lesser-known destinations worldwide while posting your vacation photos on the internet?

According to Nick Ede, a popular culture expert based in London, it is advisable to steer clear of these overused tourist spots.

He described to FEMAIL how certain places have become excessively popular on social media. Instead of appearing unique and thrilling, visiting those destinations will give the impression that you are simply conforming to the trend.

According to Nick, it is advisable to refrain from boasting about popular destinations like Santorini and Bali in the office if you want to appear more unique and original.

If you desire a calm and sophisticated vacation, the specialist has provided information on the destinations you should avoid as they are notorious for hosting rowdy Stag and Hen parties.

Seville’s Mayor José Luis Sanz has expressed that the Spanish city is not interested in party tourism and shares the same sentiment as some of the locations on the expert’s list, who are not fond of intoxicated British tourists.

The city council, according to the mayor, intends to prohibit gatherings from publicly wearing undergarments and participating in ‘indecent behaviors’.

Once again this summer, a number of famous celebrities, including Nicole Scherzinger and Matt Damon, have visited the sun-drenched Greek party island.

However, Nick cautions that Mykonos is excessively expensive and crowded. He mentions that the clubs there are amazing, but they only begin operating at 1am. Nevertheless, the sheer number of people attempting to navigate through extremely narrow paths is even worse than the chaos of shoppers rushing for sales at Next in January.

“It might be a popular spot for taking photos, but considering the expensive beach beds and drinks, it is preferable to remain on the mainland.”

However, a recent study conducted by consumer group Which? revealed that it currently holds the title of being the least desirable coastal destination in Europe.

In the survey that included over 3,500 British participants, Mykonos Town received the lowest ranking. It obtained a rating of only 58 percent and scored three stars for its seafront and friendliness.

The overall score was much lower than that of the second-last hotspot of Fuengirola in Spain, with 66 per cent. Third last was Portimão in Portugal with 68 per cent.

Locations were marked on 12 separate criteria, including quality of the beaches, seafronts and marinas, attractiveness, food and drink and value for money.

Some tourists who visited Mykonos expressed specific complaints about the town’s waterfront, marina, and the overall value they received for their money. There were instances where visitors were allegedly charged €70 (£60) for a sun lounger, which received particular criticism.

One participant in the survey conducted by The Times expressed their opinion about Mykonos, stating that it would be preferable to select another Greek island due to the existence of several more genuine options.

One person expressed their dissatisfaction with the place, stating that they would not recommend anything. Another person advised future visitors to bring double the amount of money they initially anticipate needing.

The island also has a reputation for bad behaviour among British tourists, while the scale of tourism on Mykonos and overdevelopment have also caused concern for local residents, with an estimated 220,000 visitors in a single week of peak season in July last year.

Last year Marigoula Apostolou, president of the local folklore museum, told the Observer: ‘Our island is full, it has exceeded its limits. Our natural environment has been destroyed, our water and sewage infrastructure cannot cope, and that is before we even talk about the threat to our lifestyle by being branded a party isle.’

Seville

In October 2021, Molly-Mae Hague showcased her fashionable appearance while venturing out in Seville.

Thanks to its popularity with boozed-up Brits, Nick said Seville is 'very touristy, it is a little bit tacky, and it is certainly not off the beaten path' (stock photo)

Nick described Seville as a destination that is highly favored by intoxicated British tourists. He mentioned that it is heavily frequented by tourists, lacks authenticity, and is far from being a hidden gem. (I cannot reword)

Nick mentioned that Seville is highly frequented by intoxicated British tourists, making it a popular destination. He described it as being quite touristy, slightly lacking in sophistication, and definitely not a hidden gem.

However, the city possesses a unique charm due to its way of life, the maze-like narrow streets resembling a medina, and the vibrant tapas culture. These aspects have such an extraordinary and clichéd emotional appeal that individuals are drawn to it in order to check it off their vacation must-do lists.

It comes after Seville’s Mayor José Luis Sanz said the city council is planning to ban groups from wearing underwear in the streets and engaging in ‘obscene acts’ as he declared the area has ‘no interest whatsoever’ in party tourism.

In an interview with The Times, Mr Sanz mentioned that anyone has the opportunity to celebrate their bachelor party in Seville.

We do not appreciate seeing groups of individuals dressed in various costumes, accompanied by brass bands, causing disturbance to the numerous residents of Seville. This is particularly concerning in areas of the historic center, where these residents also deserve the right to enjoy their city.

It comes amid increasing fears from locals that the religious city – famed for its architectural heritage and Seville oranges – is being overrun by youngsters who see it as a thrifty option to party abroad thanks to its good weather and cheap alcohol.

Santorini

In September 2022, Vicky Pattison had a delightful vacation in Santorini, basking in the sun.

Greece offers some of the most mesmerising landscapes on the planet – but the downside is that holidaymakers the world over have caught on, with hotspots such as Mykonos and Santorini jampacked with tourists in the summer season.

Nick expressed that Santorini is excessively popular among tourists and has a somewhat cheap and tasteless atmosphere due to the overwhelming presence of crowds, souvenir shops, and selfie sticks.

The scenery is absolutely picturesque, but the issue lies in its overwhelming crowds, making it impossible to capture a photo without unknown individuals appearing in it.

Earlier this year, a captivating revised map of the world unveiled the European vacation spots that enjoy the highest global popularity. Surprisingly, Santorini claimed the top spot.

Using Google search data, the map displays country names along with the most popular European vacation destinations searched for by their residents.

Researchers studied 12 months of Google data in 185 countries to find out which EU holiday destinations were being Googled the most using phrases like ‘destination + holiday’ or ‘destination + vacation’.

CV Villas compiled a list where Santorini emerged as the leading destination, being favored by 47 countries globally, including the United States, Finland, Colombia, Bolivia, India, Australia, and New Zealand.

Las Vegas and Benidorm

Nick recommended that individuals who visit Las Vegas should be aware that it might be considered gaudy, but that is precisely the reason why they choose to go.

He observed that the presence of many people, lengthy waiting lines, and crowded swimming areas contribute to a highly immersive experience.

In a study conducted in 2019, Las Vegas ranked second in terms of tourist-to-local ratio, with 993 visitors for every 100 locals.

Meanwhile, Nick also added Benidorm to this list, saying: ‘This infamous destination still holds onto the crown for the tackiest destination in Europe.

It is reasonable to state that the resort has developed a reputation for being inexpensive and lacking in quality over the past three decades.

However, the reality is that Benidorm is a thriving economic triumph that lures millions of budget-conscious tourists every year.

“You have the freedom to enjoy your holiday with both affordability and joy.”

Benidorm offers an abundance of sun and sangria, which may sound clichéd but is undeniably true.

Bali

Nick stated that Bali is a well-known destination, renowned for its cultural heritage. However, it is heavily populated with inexpensive bars, unappealing clubs, and crowded beaches. He expressed that despite being a relaxed tropical paradise, the presence of tourists negatively impacts the overall experience.

The expert’s comments come after it was revealed this summer that hThe Indonesian government is considering implementing restrictions on entry to the island in order to prioritize tourists of higher quality rather than quantity. Holidaymakers may be required to meet specific criteria before being allowed to enter.

Locals are becoming increasingly frustrated with rowdy and disrespectful foreigners who disregard local customs and sacred sites, leading to various changes being implemented, including limitations on the number of visitors.

In 2019, prior to the Covid pandemic, Bali had a population of 4.3 million individuals, while the number of visitors reached 6.3 million.

Government officials are concerned that the number of tourists, which has been steadily increasing since 2008 when it was less than 2 million, may experience a significant surge in the upcoming years.

The island’s reputation as a popular party destination, coupled with the large number of visitors it attracts, has led to a series of controversies.

Earlier this year, a tourist recorded a video of himself without clothes at a revered Hindu location. This occurrence was part of a sequence of comparable events. Additionally, another visitor was witnessed shouting and aggressively approaching security personnel during a religious ceremony.

While yet another group of travellers filed an official complaint about roosters crowing at dawn which infuriated Bali locals who rely on the poultry to make a living.

A figure of seven million tourists is being considered for the cap, which could see tough competition for places as Bali becomes increasingly known across the globe as a holiday destination for those on a budget.

To gain entry, applicants may be required to demonstrate sufficient funds to cover the entire cost of their trip. Any minor issues during their stay could lead to a ban on future visits.

The governor of the island, Wayan Koster, expressed to local media that these individuals from other countries display a great deal of arrogance. However, it is important to note that I do not hold any negative sentiments towards foreigners. It is crucial to conduct a thorough assessment in order to establish regulations for the arrival of foreign tourists.

‘For example, it is possible to have a restriction of up to seven million people according to specific conditions.’

Mr. Koster expressed the importance of prioritizing ‘quality tourism’ on the island. He emphasized that this approach is necessary to preserve the rich Balinese culture and local knowledge, which should be respected and upheld.

In December 2022, Vick Hope enjoyed the sunny weather in Bali.

The island has already prohibited certain tourists from operating mopeds due to their disruptive behavior.

President Joko Widodo’s government is contemplating the implementation of a tourist tax, which could range from $45 to $150. This measure aims to increase revenue generated from the island and enhance the quality of visitors.

“I cannot reword”

Although Bali is more lenient compared to other parts of Indonesia, the island maintains a strong conservative culture where locals generally disapprove of excessive alcohol consumption or posting revealing photos on social media at temples.

Miami

Nick insisted that Miami is the equivalent of Brighton in the US, characterized by its flashy and bold nature, where anything is acceptable.

Miami is renowned for its obsession with taking selfies. People in this city are constantly capturing photos of themselves, whether it’s while enjoying expensive cocktails, lounging on the beach, or pretending to exercise.

The popular culture expert asserted that upon arrival, one would feel like a genuine housewife due to the presence of gaudy shops and extravagant houses.

In 2019, a study discovered that Miami had the highest ratio of tourists to locals. The research revealed that for every 100 residents in the city of Florida, there were 1,641 visitors.

The research was carried out by visa application and processing firm Official Esta, which analysed the number of international tourist arrivals in cities around the world and compared them with population data.

Miami, which was ranked as the highest, had a population of 500,000 residents but attracted a staggering 8.1 million tourists annually.

Paris

Love Island star Maura Higgins poses in Paris in August 2022

Maura Higgins, a participant from Love Island, is seen posing in Paris during August 2022.

According to brand and culture expert Nick, Paris is renowned for its iconic landmarks and has gained even more popularity with shows like Emily in Paris. As a result, it has become one of the most stereotypical cities to visit worldwide.

However, it is acceptable to accept and appreciate this aspect as it is the most enjoyable way to experience the city. It is uncertain whether the locals truly appreciate the influx of tourists, but this adds to the city’s allure.

Nick cautioned that despite the abundance of amazing destinations available, people tend to repeatedly choose the same places. This pattern of tourism has resulted in the deterioration of some of the world’s most stunning locations.
