A pedestrian has been left combating for his or her life in hospital after being hit by a police automotive which was engaged in a pursuit.

The man, whose age has not but been revealed, was strolling down Rochdale Road within the Firgrove space of Rochdale at 3.25am on Sunday when the liveried Greater Manchester Police automotive collided with him.

He is now mentioned to be in a essential situation at Salford Royal Hospital.

The police say officers in a fully-liveried automotive had ‘requested’ a car to cease on Milnrow Road, however the driver failed to take action and continued onto Rochdale Road.

Following a brief police pursuit, a pedestrian was hit by the police car, after which the car they had been chasing continued to drive away.

Officers offered medical help to the injured pedestrian, as police cordons had been put in place and roads had been closed while a crime scene was established.

Following the incident, GMP confirmed it has made a referral to police watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

In a press release, Greater Manchester Police mentioned: ‘At round 3.25am on Sunday 19 November 2023, officers in a police car requested a car to cease in Rochdale.

‘The driver did not cease and a brief police pursuit commenced on Milnrow Road and continued onto Rochdale Road the place a collision occurred between the police car and a pedestrian.

‘The car did not cease on the scene of the collision. Officers offered medical help to the injured pedestrian, who was taken to Salford Royal Hospital the place they continue to be in a essential situation.

‘A scene has been established and enquiries are ongoing to find the male driver who made off.

‘In-line with regular process, referrals have been made to GMP’s Professional Standards Directorate and the Independent Office for Police Conduct.’
