Apocalyptic-looking clouds named after drooping ‘breasts’ transfer in over UK metropolis

An apocalyptic-looking assortment of clouds which are named after drooping breasts have been noticed over a UK metropolis.

The peculiar sight within the skies over Preston left members of the general public open-mouthed as they puzzled what precisely was occurring. Stunning photos present the clouds, which look as if they’re signalling the top of days.

The clouds fortunately didn’t spark an end-of-world second for the folks of Preston, however moderately a second of hilarity because the origin of their title emerged, LancashireLive reported.

The “mammatus” clouds had been seen hanging over town on Sunday (December 10) afternoon.

Their title is derived from the Latin phrase “mamma”, that means udder or breast. Air turbulence throughout the cloud causes plumes of colder air to emerge from the underside of the climate base, that means pouches of air hold low and create a drooping impact.

The Met Office says: “Mammatus clouds are some of the most unusual and distinctive cloud formations with a series of bulges or pouches emerging from the base of a cloud.

“The form of mammatus formations can differ extensively; from the traditional protruding form, to a extra elongated tube hanging from the cloud above.”

It marks a change of tempo from the wilder aspect of the climate, with Brits bracing themselves for what might be a White Christmas. The Met Office has warned of snow and ice hazards all over to the brand new 12 months.

The forecast for December 25 to January 8 reads: “More likely to be unsettled compared to the preceding settled spell with bands of rain crossing the UK with brighter conditions and showers in between.

“The wettest and windiest situations are almost definitely within the west and northwest. The probability of a colder spell of climate, with hazards similar to snow and ice, does enhance later in December and into the New Year interval.

“However, on balance conditions are more likely to remain generally mild and wet.”
