Care sector ‘blindsided’ by Tory visa legal guidelines that ‘put headlines over want’

“Annoyed” care sector leaders have been “blindsided” by draconian Tory immigration legal guidelines which danger a system already “creaking at the edges”, MPs heard.

The head of Care England accused ministers of rewriting visa guidelines with little consideration of the “enormous” impression it might have on susceptible customers and their households. He advised the Health and Social Care Committee that the Government has put “very little emphasis” on rising the homegrown workforce. Prof Green stated: “I think the timing (of the new rules) is unfortunate. They haven’t got a really clear strategy on how they’re going to grow the homegrown workforce… there’s no strategy on this.”

And he warned the coverage “has been driven by something completely outside the issue of health and social care”, including: “It’s a classic case of policy driven by a headline, not by a need.” A drop within the variety of staff would pressure extra unqualified relations to take care of family members, he stated.
