Darts followers fume as MC does not use star’s impolite nickname on Ally Pally debut

Darts followers have been left fuming by John McDonald’s resolution to not use Owen Bates’ brilliantly impolite nickname.

Bates, 21, is making his Paddy Power World Darts Championship debut at Alexandra Palace and faces Steve Lennon within the first spherical. Though MC McDonald clearly did not get the nickname memo.

Bates has the nickname ‘The Master’ and it is usually included in between his first title and surname in an exquisite pun. Though McDonald didn’t use the moniker.

Instead the legendary MC launched Owen Bates as simply that, with followers shortly taking to social media to voice their disappointment.

One wrote, alongside a collection of heartbroken emojis: “It should’ve been “Please welcome Owen ‘The Master’ Bates”.”

While one other added: “Justice For Owen Bates’ nickname.”

One extra wrote: “He will always be known as ‘the master’. Owen Bates should have kept it.” With one other commenting: “Owen Bates is a master at the darts lol”.

Bates certified for the Paddy Power World Darts Championship because of his second place end on the Challenge Tour Order of Merit this 12 months.
