Politics newest information: Sunak says election in second half of 2024 is his ‘working assumption’

Rishi Sunak stated his “working assumption” is that he’ll maintain a “general election in the second half of this year”.

Speaking to broadcasters on a go to to a youth centre in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, the Prime Minister stated: “So, my working assumption is we’ll have a general election in the second half of this year and in the meantime I’ve got lots that I want to get on with.”

Pressed if he may rule out a May election, he repeated it was his “working assumption” that the vote can be held later in 2024.

His feedback got here after Sir Keir Starmer used a speech in Bristol to insist the Labour Party is “ready” for the following election. 

The repeal of the Fixed-term Parliaments Act in 2022 restored the power of prime ministers to set election dates. The laws, which was rolled out in 2011, had dictated that elections needed to be held each 5 years on the primary Thursday in May.
