Dramatic second electrical double decker London bus bursts into flames

An electrical double decker bus burst into flames in London this morning, inflicting rush hour mayhem as ‘terrified’ witnesses reported listening to a ‘large bang’.

Clouds of smoke billowed from the automobile within the centre of Wimbledon after it caught fireplace at about 7.20am, with firefighters organising an 80ft (25m) cordon.

As police confirmed there have been no accidents however urged individuals to keep away from the scene, native resident Max Pashley informed City AM: ‘We heard an enormous bang. We had been terrified.’

Another witness, Roderick Cameron, tweeted a photograph of the flames and stated: ‘Not what we count on to see on the varsity run. Bus on fireplace – and the fumes are terrible.’

The Optare Metrodecker 1050 bus operates route 200 from Mitcham to Raynes Park, and it has been run by Go-Ahead London from the Merton storage since June 2021.

The blaze on Alwyne Road led to Wimbledon Hill Road being partially blocked with congestion to Wimbledon Village southbound and to the Broadway northbound. 

A London Fire Brigade spokeswoman informed MailOnline: ‘Firefighters have been known as to a hearth involving a bus on Wimbledon Hill Road in Wimbledon.

‘Part of a double-decker electrical bus is alight. A 25-metre cordon has been put in place as a precaution and highway closures are in place. There are at the moment no reviews of any accidents.

‘The Brigade was known as at 7.21am. Three fireplace engines and round 15 firefighters from Wimbledon, New Malden and Wandsworth fireplace stations are on the scene.’

And a Scotland Yard spokeswoman informed MailOnline: ‘Police had been known as at 7.23am on Thursday, January 11 to reviews of a bus on fireplace at Wimbledon Hill and Alwyne Road, SW19.

‘Officers, London Fire Brigade attended. At the scene a bus had caught fireplace. Road closures and cordons are in place. We count on them to stay for a while.

‘There had been no reported accidents. We thank the local people for his or her endurance and cooperation as emergency providers work on the scene. If potential please keep away from the realm.’

Earlier, the Merton Police account tweeted: ‘Please keep away from the realm of Wimbledon Hill Road this morning. There shall be congestion because the highway is blocked off in each south and northbound instructions.’

Daniel Holden, Conservative councillor and deputy chief of Merton Conservative Group, tweeted: ‘Bus fireplace this morning in Hillside on Wimbledon Hill Road.

‘I hope nobody was injured by this incident. @MPSMerton @LondonFire on the scene and that part of highway has been closed. Buses and visitors are on diversion.’

MailOnline has additionally contacted Transport for London (TfL) for remark. The reason for the hearth shouldn’t be but identified.

Electric buses have been carrying passengers in London since 2014 when Boris Johnson was Mayor, and there are about 1,000 now in operation throughout the capital.
