World’s shaggiest sheep Shrek carried 27kg fleece after hiding in cave for years
The “world’s shaggiest sheep” was in determined want of a sheering when he was found hiding close to a cave after being on the run for a number of years.
The merino sheep, named Shrekapo or Shrek for brief, grew a large fleece whereas constantly evading seize in New Zealand for six years. He was carrying round 27kg of wool when he was lastly caught in Lake Tekapo in 2010.
Owner of Shrek Gavin Loxton stated it was unclear how Shrekapo turned a hermit sheep, including: “We put the lambs back out after tailing… when we bought them all back in for weaning he must have been left behind up there on his own.”

After six years elusive sheep was lastly noticed hiding in rock in some hills close to Lake Tekapo and when he was captured later that day, it turned clear simply how heavy Shrek’s fleece was – practically half his physique weight in wool.
The animal had most likely been roaming the hills alone for the previous three winters, stated Gavin Loxton, proprietor of Sawdon Station at Lake Tekapo, stories the Guardian.
“He had been spotted up there before by rabbiters and Tahr hunters, and had probably had about three sightings, but any time we had been up there to get him, nobody had been able to find him,” Loxton stated. “We had pretty much given up on the whole process, but he’s made it back, so that’s excellent.”
Loxton held some celebratory drinks and “hatched a plan” to shave Shrek on the Easter Monday farmer’s market in Tekapo. Three hundred folks watched the sheering and Shrek was 18.6kg lighter after, albeit just a little wobbly whereas getting used to his new weight.
Shrek died in 2011 after having a high-profile profession. He met then Prime Minister of New Zealand Helen Clark, turned the topic of a number of kids’s books and made common charity appearances.
