Hospital strikes to proceed as NHS consultants reject Government pay supply

Top hospital medical doctors have narrowly rejected the Government’s pay supply in a bitter blow to Rishi Sunak.

Consultant members of the British Medical Association in England voted 51.1% towards a pay deal geared toward ending the lengthy dispute in referendum between December 14 and January 23.

NHS consultants in England took half in 9 days of strikes in early October as they urged ministers to extend their wage supply. But the dispute seemed near being resolved in November when the Department of Health introduced the 2 sides “have reached an agreement to put an offer to union members following constructive negotiations”.

Dr Vishal Sharma, BMA consultants committee chair, stated: “The vote has proven that consultants don’t really feel the present supply goes far sufficient to finish the present dispute and supply a long-term answer to the recruitment and retention disaster for senior medical doctors.”
