NBA icon Michael Jordan is one of richest men on Earth with colossal net worth

Michael Jordan is one of the richest men on Earth after seeing his net worth almost double in just three years.

The NBA icon is the richest sports star in the world owing to his glittering 19-year basketball career, when he won six NBA titles, six MVPs in the NBA finals and 14 inclusions in the league’s All-Star team, pocketing around $100million during his playing days through salary and signing bonuses.

But it’s been his ventures off the court which have brought him so much of his wealth, with most of his fortune coming from his Air Jordan collaboration with Nike. The 60-year-old has also added to his worth by working with brands such as McDonalds, Gatorade and Hanes.

Jordan’s most recent royalty check from Nike saw him pocket a ridiculous $260m, bringing his net worth, according to Forbes, to $3billion (£2.35bn). That’s $1bn more than he was valued at last year and $1.4bn more than his net worth in 2021.

MJ’s eye-watering net worth has seen him in The Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans – becoming the first professional athlete to feature on the rankings. Jordan’s first venture with the Air Jordan sneaker in 1985 was estimated by Nike to sell around $3m worth of merchandise, but the brand actually raked in $70m in sales.

Jordan’s continued collaborations with Nike saw the brand announce in a report last year they had made an annual wholesale revenue of $6.6bn. Air Jordan’s reach has grown vastly beyond the NBA and the US, seeing French giants PSG don the iconic Jordan logo on their alternative kits in recent years.

Other ventures have seen the former Chicago Bulls star invest in gambling company Draftkings and become co-owner of NASCAR team 23XI racing in 2020. He also owns the Charlotte Hornets, who were recently valued at $1.5bn.
