‘I text Roy Hodgson after he was rushed to hospital – his replies reassured me’

Murphy, who was Hodgson’s captain at Fulham and led them to the Europa League last, has stayed in contact with him. He messaged Hodgson after listening to about his sickness.

“Not only was Roy Hodgson a major influence on my career, he’s someone I’ve stayed close to after I hung up my boots, which isn’t always the case in the football business,” Murphy informed the Daily Mail. “I messaged him after the worrying news that he’d been taken ill at Crystal Palace’s training ground and was reassured by his replies. “At 76, he’s absolutely right to put himself first – and he indicated he’s starting to realise that himself. I’m sure he felt an enormous sense of responsibility in a tough campaign for Palace, but if this is a full stop on his managerial career, he should step away with full peace of mind.”

“But if the question is do I think that this group of players are good enough to get us out now? I do. I think they showed a lot [against Chelsea] which gives me even more faith and belief.”
