Gary Wilson pays emotional tribute to late mentor after Welsh Open snooker win

Gary Wilson paid an emotional tribute to his former coach Stan Chambers after triumphing on the Welsh Open.

The ‘Tyneside Terror’, 38, put the cherry on high of a wonderful week in Llandudno – which included a most break in his semi-final towards John Higgins. He beat Martin O’Donnell 9-4 to elevate the Ray Reardon trophy on Sunday (February 18) night time.

It’s the third rating title of his profession, following successive Scottish Open successes within the final two years, all of which have come following the dying of his mentor Chambers in 2021.

“You just go through a lot of years of struggling and as Martin said, you have a lot more downs than you have ups. I’m just grateful I’ve had a few ups recently. It’s been amazing lately.

“Don’t actually know what else to say apart from, if I’m going to say one thing, Stan Chambers. I discussed it the primary event I gained. I’m not doing too unhealthy Stan am I? I’m getting there for you mate, attempting my greatest.”
