Father dies after being swept out to sea by riptide

A ‘mild and caring’ father died after being swept out to sea by a riptide simply three weeks after his youngest little one was born.

Matthew Collins, 39, entered the water to chill down with a good friend following a gymnasium session final October, an inquest heard.

But the pair encountered robust currents and Mr Collins was pulled into intensely chilly water off Broadstairs in Kent.

Mr Collins was airlifted to hospital, however was pronounced lifeless on arrival.

The tragedy occurred simply three weeks after the delivery of his sixth little one and left his household heartbroken, the inquest in Maidstone was instructed on Friday February 16.

Mr Collins had been to PureGym in Broadstairs on the morning of Wednesday October 18 earlier than going to the seaside off Cliff Promenade within the city.

Coroner Katrina Hepburn mentioned: ‘They went out into the water and Matthew had problem and obtained swept by the tide.

‘By the time the coastguard had arrived, Matthew had develop into unresponsive within the water.

‘He was taken out of the water by the coastguard and brought to hospital by air ambulance.’

Ms Hepburn concluded Mr Collins grew to become exhausted battling towards the waves, and that immersion within the chilly water and an underlying case of thalassaemia – a genetic blood illness – prompted a deadly cardiac arrhythmia.

Mr Collins’ mom, Melanie Collins-Brett, mentioned her son’s loss of life has devastated their household.

Speaking earlier than the inquest, she mentioned: ‘He was the perfect son ever and I’m going to overlook him terribly.

‘He was my good friend and such a mild, loving and caring son.

‘It’s onerous to think about I’m not going to see him once more, and my coronary heart will bleed till I do. I really like and miss him.’

In a tribute, she wrote: ‘You are and can all the time be the love of my life.

‘I do know given the prospect you’d’ve been an important dad to our Ronnie and I’ll remind him of you daily, as will all his brothers and sisters.

‘He’s going to be so beloved and guarded. My coronary heart’s damaged. I really like you Matt.’
