A well-liked mountain bike path has been booby-trapped with sinister home-made units studded with four-inch nails.

One bike owner has been injured by the medieval-looking spikes, which had been partially buried on the foot of a steep downhill path on the Philpstoun Bing close to Linlithgow, West Lothian.

Mountain biker Tich Kent was fortunate to flee critical harm after being spiked. The steel gadget – which had 11 four-inch nails welded to a base plate – shredded each tyres on his bike and left him with a puncture wound.

He believes it was laid as ‘path sabotage’ and should have been geared toward riders of motocross bikes.

Mr Kent, an IT employee, was out biking along with his spouse when the incident occurred on Saturday.
