‘Absolutely psychological’ highway row that has ‘turned UK neighbourhood into automobile park’
Residents of Gabalfa, Cardiff, complained of “absolutely mental” scenes as “dangerous” and “illegal” drivers take over their group.
They say they’re “fed up” with vehicles being parked outdoors their properties. According to residents, college students from Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Llandaff Campus have been parking their vehicles there for twenty years, however the concern has obtained “progressively worse”.
Arguments between residents and college students occur regularly attributable to vehicles being parked over driveways and obstructing the pavements, forcing individuals to stroll on the highway, notably affecting wheelchair customers and other people with pushchairs. The animosity has risen to the purpose {that a} signal has been erected to keep at bay college students, studies WalesOn-line.

Local Malcolm Pepper, 79, described the scenes as “absolutely mental” and mentioned yearly is worse than the final. He mentioned: “There are not enough car parking facilities for students, there needs to be more to stop them parking around here.”
Mark Davies, 53, has lived within the space since 2003 and mentioned it has been a difficulty since he moved there. He mentioned: “The problem isn’t that the students park here, it’s the way they park. They park on double-yellow lines, across the pavements and on the corners.
“I perceive why they park right here although, would you pay to park some other place when you could possibly park right here without cost? But Gabalfa has was a parking lot over time due to it.”
Limited space means parking at the Llandaff campus is only available to staff members who live further than two miles from the site. The same rule has been in force since 2010. The University has tried to ease issues by handing out £200 annual bus pass discounts to 800 of its students through the Welsh Government.

A spokesperson for Cardiff Metropolitan University mentioned: “We recognise that our Llandaff campus is embedded in the heart of local communities, and we work hard to ensure that our students are thoughtful about their behaviours, including car usage, and how these can impact our campus neighbours. We’re proud of our strong community links and that, even when we have growing student numbers, we have been able to maintain strong positive relationships between ourselves and our neighbours.
“We encourage our students not to bring cars to campus wherever this is possible, and to use public transport and active travel wherever they can. We subsidise bus travel between campuses.”
In January Cardiff Council proposed a new parking plan that will change on-street parking across Cardiff if approved, following a public consultation. The council hope to introduce ‘parking zones’ within Parking Management Areas around the city to give residents a better opportunity to park on their street and reduce commuter parking.
For Gabalfa, this would mean that all on-street parking will be resident permit only, managed between 8am until 10pm. A draft of the new parking plan was approved by the cabinet on Thursday, January 18 but a public consultation will need to take place for the City Parking Plan to go ahead.
