The member of the family theorised that the robbers knew they had been overseas.

They stated: “I think they knew we were away. I think somebody was watching and saw a change in our habits and used it as an opportunity.

“It’s very surprising. It’s that sense of safety you usually have in your individual dwelling, it is now not there. You are continuously checking doorways and home windows and the smallest noise can wake you up and you’re reliving the second.”

The householder added: “Personally, I think they were after the car keys. We had just bought a BMW.”
