Cost of changing Tory MPs in by-elections hits £4million below Rishi Sunak
Tory MPs who’ve given up their seats this Parliament have price the Government greater than an estimated £4 million.
It comes as Lib Dem evaluation of the small print of Jeremy Hunt ’s Budget reveals the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities’ (DLUHC) funding is about to be reduce virtually in half in actual phrases. Government figures counsel that between 2021 and 2023 the common price to the taxpayer of operating a by-election was £450,000.
So the unprecedented 9 Tory by-elections seen since 2019 – not together with these triggered when an MP died – would have price round £4.05million. The 9 by-elections contains the recall that ousted Peter Bone and the resignation of disgraced Chris Pincher.
And it contains Boris Johnson and Nadine Dorries vacating their seats. The price to native councils of operating by-elections is reimbursed by the Government and revealed by the Communities division.
Helen Morgan, the Liberal Democrat Communities spokesperson branded the Tories’ administration of native authorities funding a “shambles.”
She mentioned: “Conservative MPs are adding millions to DLUHC’s costs thanks to their inability to stay out of scandal. This sleaze ridden party has proven itself totally unfit for office.”

Cash-strapped councils are already going through a real-terms funding shortfall from central authorities of 25%. When trying on the funding shortfall per particular person it’s much more stark, with funding per particular person for Councils for central authorities falling by 40% since 2016/17.
At their Spring Conference, the Liberal Democrats will go a movement calling on the federal government to shut the £4bn funding shortfall at the moment estimated for Councils by the DLUHC Committee.
Ms Morgan mentioned: “Councils have seen their funding slashed by this Conservative government. Much loved services are falling by the wayside and local communities are bearing the brunt of this neglect. The Conservative party has shown quite clearly it doesn’t care about local government and the vital services it provides for communities.
“It is beggars belief, that while a record number of Councils have gone bankrupt and dozens more are on the brink, that this Conservative government is set to cut the DLUHC budget in half.” She added: “The government must urgently close the £4 billion funding gap that Councils are faced with and ensure that local communities get the services they deserve.”
