RNLI man is charged over loss of life of fisherman in rescue

An RNLI volunteer has been charged over the loss of life of a grandfather whose fishing boat capsized throughout a rescue operation.

William Murray McCubbin, 60, was pulled from the water after his vessel sank near Port William harbour, Wigtownshire, in November 2022.

His boat had turn out to be stranded on the rocks and efforts had been already being made to recuperate it when it capsized.

Police have now arrested and charged a 48-year-old volunteer lifeboat crew member following a 16-month investigation.

A Police Scotland spokesman mentioned: ‘A 48-year-old man has been arrested and charged after a person died when a ship capsized throughout a restoration operation in 2022.

‘The incident occurred close to to Port William, Newton Stewart, round 4.30pm on Saturday, 19 November, 2022. The 60-year-old man was taken to Galloway Community Hospital the place he died a short while later. A report will probably be despatched to the procurator fiscal.’
