With speculation swirling around Westminster of possible plots among Tory MPs to oust Mr Sunak before a possible general election wipeout, Sir Ed said it is now time to end the Conservatives’ “cleaning soap opera”. “The reality is, this Prime Minister is now so weak, he’ll say something to cease his personal right-wing MPs from kicking him out – earlier than the British individuals get the prospect,” he added.
In a rallying call to the party faithful on Sunday, Sir Ed claimed that only his party can beat the Conservatives in parts of the South of England – and hail a “once in a generation” chance to smash the Tories. It follows a series of stunning by-election victories for the Lib Dems in recent years, overturning massive Conservative majorities.
Sir Ed said: “The alternative is earlier than us, to make this a once-in-a-generation election. In so many elements of the nation, solely we are able to beat the Conservatives. And we should.
