Cricketer, 20, dies as heartbreaking tributes paid to ‘vibrant spirit’
Worcestershire cricketer Josh Baker has died aged 20.
The spin bowler signed a professional deal with the county in 2021 and was described as a “popular figure” among the squad.
A club statement read: “His warmth, kindness, and professionalism were remarkable, making him a true credit to his family and a loved member of our team.”
Ashley Giles, Worcestershire’s Chief Executive Officer, shared an emotional message, saying: “The news of Josh’s passing has left us all devastated.
“Josh was much more than a teammate; he was an integral part of our cricket family. We will all miss him terribly. All our love and prayers go out to Josh’s family and friends.”
The club has confirmed it is supporting Josh’s family and plans to “honour his memory in a manner befitting the remarkable person he was”. Worcestershire stated they would not be making any further comments during this sensitive period.
More tributes have flooded in following the tragic news, with a statement from the ECB reading: “The ECB is desperately sad to learn of the passing of Josh Baker. This is devastating news.
“We extend our best wishes to Josh’s family and friends, to everyone who knew and loved him, and to everyone at Worcestershire CCC.”
Giles’ former England captain Michael Vaughan added: “This is so sad. Thoughts with all his family & close friends.”
