‘Marmite’ Meghan Markle ‘avoiding UK fearing getting booed once more’, professional claims

Meghan Markle has been described as a “Marmite” character by a royal expert, who felt she wasn’t returning to the UK for fear of being booed.

The Duchess of Sussex is not expected to join her husband Prince Harry on his trip to the UK next week for the Invictus Games. On Wednesday, May 8, he is also due to attend the Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral but, according to ITV News’ royal correspondent Chris Ship, the reason Meghan won’t be there is that she doesn’t want a negative reception.

As he told The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show, were she to be booed at the famous cathedral, it would be the second time, something she would rather avoid.

The couple last visited the cathedral for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee where, as they exited the car, the sound of booing was clearly audible.

Chris Ship told the show: “The difficulty is you remember last time they went to St Paul’s Cathedral, which was for the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, they got booed. We heard the boos for them. We should be clear there was also people cheering for them, but there were definitely boos at St Paul’s Cathedral.

“So going back there I can see why Meghan may not wish to accompany Harry there.”

The couple will head off to Nigeria together following Harry’s trip to the UK. It will be the next stop on the couple’s Invictus tour. The same outlet reported that a source said Meghan has “shown no interest” in coming back to Britain.

Ship claimed that Meghan’s “Marmite character” would however be received differently in Nigeria. He continued: “I think Nigerians will be doing everything they can to make this a successful tour and put Nigeria on the map.

“But we must remember that as much as Meghan in this country is a bit of Marmite character, people love her or people really don’t love her, she is likely to be seen very very differently in Africa.”

He anticipated that because she is a “global figure” it was likely she would be given the red carpet treatment during the trip. It is the country’s first trip to Nigeria as a couple.

A spokesperson for Meghan has been contacted for comment.
