Which councils in England are up for grabs within the native elections?

Vote counting is underway across 107 local councils in England after millions of Britons went to the polls on Thursday.

More than 2,600 council seats were up for grabs in this year’s local elections, while 11 mayoral contests were also held on the same day.

Meanwhile, 37 police and crime commissioners were being elected across England and Wales.

Around a third (35) of councils are expected to declare their results tonight, with nearly two-thirds (68) set to declare during the day on Friday.

The rest of the results will trickle out over the weekend in what many expect to be a dismal few days for the Tories.

A horrid performance for his party will pile pressure on Rishi Sunak‘s position as PM, with Tory rebels circling and ready to pounce.

But Sir Keir Starmer also faces a challenge to show Labour are on course to win power at the looming general election.

This interactive map reveals where counting will be taking place tonight and over the coming days…

Most of the council seats up for re-election in England were last contested in 2021, at the peak of Boris Johnson’s popularity as the Covid-19 vaccine was rolled out.

The 11 mayoral contests have been held in East Midlands, North East, Tees Valley, York & North Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, West Midlands, South Yorkshire, London, Liverpool City Region, and Salford.

The key contests are in Tees Valley and the West Midlands where Tory incumbents Ben Houchen and Andy Street, respectively, are looking to hang on and give Mr Sunak some good news.

In London, Sadiq Khan is expected to win an historic third term in City Hall despite a challenge from Tory rival Susan Hall over ULEZ and crime rates.

Here’s where police and crime commissioners are being elected across England and Wales…
