‘Old woman’ child names make comeback in 2024 – together with Royal favorite

As the saying goes, what goes around comes around, and this seems to be true for old-fashioned baby names.

The norms surrounding the names we bestow upon our little ones have certainly relaxed in recent years, with celebrities like Elon Musk and Kim Kardashian opting for some rather unique names for their kids.

While these unconventional choices may appeal to some parents, it’s evident the classic names are making a significant comeback.

The team at SnappyWords put together a list of the top 20 retro names predicted to make a return in 2024, suggesting classrooms will once again echo with the sounds of Bettys and Patricias.

The resurgence of these “old-lady” names can also be credited to celebrity influence. Consider Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds, who named their three children James, Betty, and Inex.

Likewise, footballer Frank Lampard and his wife Christine chose to name their daughter Patricia in 2018, in honour of his late mother.

Even contemporary star Lily Allen has dipped into the vintage baby name pool, choosing Adelaide and Ethel for her children, according to the Mirror.

A spokesperson for SnappyWords said: “Opting for a vintage name that’s fallen out of common use is a way to seem original or creative without being too audacious.

“It might be a surprising pick, yet not an unfamiliar one. Old-fashioned baby names carry a rich history. Over time, many have taken on charming qualities that parents admire.

“Names like Cordelia, Julia, Gloria and Adelaide may seem romantic and have royal and elegant rings, while Atticus and Earl feel bold.”

The experts also made a case for names such as Henry, Oliver, and Louis, stating they will always be “hard to resist” due to their “deeply-rooted Royal associations”.

They explained: “The popularity of these vintage names is on the rise, thanks to their elegant and historic appeal. It’s no surprise that more and more people are choosing them for their newborns.”
