Arsenal followers rage at ‘disgraceful’ problem on Bukayo Saka being ignored by VAR

Arsenal fans have been left raging after a dangerous tackle on Bukayo Saka went unpunished.

As the Gunners took on Bournemouth in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, Saka came in for close attention from the Cherries, who were clearly eager to shackle the England forward. However, the visitors took matters a little too far with one challenge in particular from Ryan Christie.

The Scottish midfielder caught Saka with an X-rated tackle which left a visible mark near the top of the 22-year-old’s shin. Despite the nature of the challenge, Christie escaped punishment, with VAR bizarrely opting not to intervene.

Gunners were supporters were left furious by both the tackle and the lack of action. One said: “Why does Saka limp so much? Probably because these aren’t even given as fouls against him.”

A second asked: “Was VAR having a coffee break?” A third fumed: “Another red card overlooked. Disgrace.”

A fourth said: “How that’s gone completely unpunished is ridiculous.” A fifth asked: “How’s that not a red card? This is the third nasty challenge in three weeks and no card. What the hell is going on? PGMOL and VAR are an absolute shamble.”

However, a few fans criticised Saka’s flimsy leg protection. One joked: “If only there was some kind of protection that could be worn on the shins to stop this sort of injury.” A second said: “If players actually wore shin pads this would be avoided.”

However, Saka, who opened the scoring from the penalty spot just before half-time, and his team-mates were smiling at full-time as they secured a 3-0 win to keep their Premier League title hopes alive. Leandro Trossard and the outstanding Declan Rice scored the other goals in the second half.
