Birmingham vs Norwich medical emergency suspends Championship relegation conflict

A medical emergency in the stands temporarily halted Saturday’s Championship clash between Birmingham City and Norwich.

The second-tier clash at St. Andrews had to be suspended while a fan received medical attention after reportedly falling ill. The two teams were drawing 0-0 around 25 minutes into the fixture when it emerged a supporter required treatment.

It unfolded minutes after a very similar incident at Rotherham, who hosted Cardiff City in their final game of the campaign. Medics from both clubs ran across the field at New York Stadium to treat the stricken supporter, who was reportedly wheeled out of the ground minutes later.

Birmingham came into the final day of the normal season sat 22nd in the Championship and in need of a result to preserve their place in the league. Gary Rowett is attempting to save the club while serving as interim replacement for Tony Mowbray, who is away from the club on medical leave.

It wasn’t long before the second-tier showdown was allowed to get back underway following the stoppage.

Fans flooded social media with messages of support and well wishes to the supporter in question at St. Andrews.
