Sheffield United branded ‘worst Prem crew ever’ after delivery one hundredth purpose

Sheffield United have made history… but not the sort they’d want to celebrate.

The Blades have been blunt all season and on top of going down to the Championship, they’re also going down as one of the worst ever teams in the Premier League after conceding their 100th goal of the campaign against Nottingham Forest.

It sees them become just the second team to achieve the hapless feat in the competition’s history, though they’re the first to do it in a 38-game season. If they concede another goal in their last two matches, they’ll officially become the leakiest team to ever play in the division.

Fans leaped onto social media during the game to hurl insults at Chris Wilder’s men, with many labelling them “the worst ever Premier League team”. One said: “Sheffield United are the worst Prem ever. They’ve looked cr** all season. Glad they’re going down”.

“100 goals conceded now for Sheffield United. That’s absolutely atrocious stuff. Surely the worst team in Prem history,” another wrote.

Chris Wilder’s men are currently tied on 100 goals with Swindon Town, who registered the dismal tally in the 42-game 1993/94 season. Ipswich Town have the third-worst record, conceding 93 goals in 1994/95 – another 42-game season.

Are Sheffield United the worst team in Premier League history? Let us know in the comments section below.

Derby County previously held the worst goal record over a 38-game campaign, shipping 89 goals in 2007/08. Next on the list is Fulham, who shipped 85 goals in 2013/14, and Norwich City, who let in 84 during the 2021/22 season.

Fortunately, Sheffield United still have a way to go before being labelled the leakiest team in English top flight history. That honour goes to Manchester United, who conceded a whopping 115 goals in the 1930/31 season (42 games). Elsewhere, Sunderland shipped 111 goals in 1950/51, while Aston Villa conceded 110 in 1935/36.

The Bramall Lane club were officially relegated last month following their 5-1 defeat to Newcastle, so putting up a fight against survival-chasing Forest was always going to be a tough ask.

They started the game well though, and took the lead through Ben Brereton Diaz via the penalty spot, but the visitors quickly hit back through Callum Hudson-Odoi.

After the break, Forest took the lead through Ryan Yates, before Hudson-Odoi grabbed his second goal just after the hour-mark. Then, to make matters worse, Anel Ahmedhodzic was sent off for United in the dying embers.

Up next for the Blades is a trip to Everton before they wrap up their dismal season at home to Tottenham.
