The Met Office has issued a “danger to life” weather warning across several major UK cities and towns.

The yellow-level warning for thunderstorms is split into two parts, covering the south-east of England as well as a huge chunk of northern England, Wales and Scotland.

Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds, Portsmouth, Brighton and South London are all covered by the warning, which comes into force at 1pm today (Monday, May 6) and last until 9pm.

The Met Office has told people to expect:

  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

The warning adds that some regions could see as much as 40mm of rain fall across one or two hours. People who live in areas prone to flash flooding have be told to “consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit”.
