West Ham agree deal for supervisor worse than Moyes as followers baffled by ‘downgrade’
West Ham look set to announce their new manager after agreeing a deal to bring Julen Lopetegui to the London Stadium.
David Moyes’ future is looking increasingly uncertain – and the Hammers were battered 5-0 by Chelsea on Sunday afternoon. Moyes, 61, has seen his side take a sudden downturn in form this calendar year – and the writing looks to be on the wall.
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Lopetegui has agreed terms with the Hammers to become their new head coach, replacing Moyes in the summer. However, West Ham fans have been left fuming thanks to the Spaniard’s poor win rate at his first Premier League club.

Lopetegui’s last spell on these shores saw him take the reins at Wolves in November 2022, but he registered a win rate of just 37%, before finishing 13th and leaving in August 2023, when he was replaced by Gary O’Neil. Moyes, on the other hand, has a 44.54% win rate at the Hammers over his second spell, having previously finished sixth, seventh and 14th, with the Hammers currently in ninth.
When it comes to major honours, both men have European trophies to their name. Lopetegui won the Europa League in 2022 while at Sevilla, while Moyes claimed the Europa Conference League last season.
What do you think about West Ham turning to Julen Lopetegui? Let us know in the comments section
“From David Moyes to Julen Lopetegui… that is the biggest downgrade in football history. The disrespect towards a manager who won a European trophy at this club as well. Crazy,” one fan fumed. While a second replied: “How are they getting rid of Moyes for a downgrade lol…”
“How’s this man better than Moyes ffs,” a third questioned. And another added: “West Ham to replace their third most successful manager ever with a guy who did worse than Gary O’Neil at Wolves with twice the budget…”
However, others were more positive about the potential arrival, with some referencing how he took Sevilla into the Champions League knockout stage. One fan said: “Julen can take them to the next level!”
According to The Athletic, Lopetegui is a man in demand, and Bayern Munich had been eyeing up a potential swoop for the Wolves flop. However, Lopetegui turned down the approach, seemingly favouring a move to the London Stadium.
Spanish journalist Guillem Balague wrote: “West Ham and Julen Lopetegui have reached an agreement Another chance to show, as he did at Wolves, that he is one of the top European managers. He had offers from European teams but his priority was to take over a CL side or stay in England.”
