Jose Mourinho eyeing up second Man Utd stint as stress mounts on Erik ten Hag

Jose Mourinho is itching for a sensational second stint at the helm of Manchester United, insiders claim.

The Special One has reportedly been whispering to pals that he’d “walk” back to Manchester to take charge of the Red Devils once more, despite being given the boot back in December 2018.

The two-time Champions League champ, who’s chummy with United bigwig Sir Jim Ratcliffe, isn’t holding his breath for a callback from his old stomping ground though.

Current gaffer Erik ten Hag watched on in horror as his squad suffered a humiliating 4-0 wallop by Crystal Palace on Monday night, marking a new low with the club’s 13th defeat this Premier League season, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Sitting uncomfortably in eighth place, United are staring down the barrel of their worst finish since 1990, and with a staggering 18 losses this year, it’s their gloomiest run since the ’77-’78 season.

Pressure is starting to mount on Erik ten Hag

Despite a glimmer of hope with an FA Cup final clash against Manchester City set for May 25, Ten Hag’s future is hanging by a thread after a shocker of a season that saw United crash out of Europe before Santa could say ‘ho ho ho’ and tumble out of the League Cup early doors.

With whispers of Ten Hag’s shaky standing, United bigwigs have been scouting for potential replacements, even though Ratcliffe, who snagged a 27.7 per cent share of the club in February, hasn’t thrown his full weight behind the Dutchman just yet.

Mourinho took over from Louis van Gaal in May 2016 and led United to victories in the League Cup and Europa League in his debut season.

In his second season, United climbed to second place in the Premier League and made it to the FA Cup final, but Mourinho was then left unsupported in the 2018 summer transfer window.

The ex-Chelsea boss’s latest stint was at Roma, where he steered the team to Europa Conference League success in 2022. Roma made it to the Europa League final last season but fell short against Sevilla in a penalty shootout.
