Nottingham Forest study consequence of Premier League factors deduction enchantment

Nottingham Forest have failed in their appeal against a four-point deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Premier League side were charged way back in January and were subsequently docked four points in March. Their battle to avoid the drop back into the Championship became even harder as a result, and had left them just three points above the relegation zone following the weekend’s games, which included their crucial 3-1 win at bottom side Sheffield United on Saturday.

Forest made their appeal on April 24, but the independent commission has decided to uphold the original decision. According to The Athletic, Forest were “extremely dismayed by the tone and content of the Premier League’s submissions” and “surprised that the Premier League gave no consideration at all to the unique circumstances of the club and its mitigation”.

Luton and Burnley sit just three and five points behind Forest respectively. Luton were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton on Friday night, while Burnley were thumped 4-1 by Newcastle at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Meanwhile, there was a seven-point gap between Forest in 17th and Brentford in 16th with two games left to play.

Forest are still in danger of relegation

As we near the climax of the 2023/24 season, it’s been a tense wait for Forest and their rivals. Every point gained or lost is, of course, vital.

Everton’s first case took around eight months, from when they were charged in March 2023 to eventually having an initial 10-point penalty handed out in November.

Sean Dyche’s team, who sit 15th and 11 points clear of the drop after a timely uplift in form, appealed and had it reduced to six, while they are also appealing a second two-point deduction for a separate breach.
