UK in danger from synthetic intelligence as ‘finest geared up’ nation listed

The UK could be under threat from an artificial intelligence takeover, a new report has claimed.

With the use of AI ramping up in all sectors of life, the experts at Slingo put together some research to work out which of the world’s countrys would fare best in the event of a full-scale AI takeover. For the experts, an AI takeover is a scenario where AI becomes the most dominant form of intelligence on Earth, which can have worrying implications, from automation to copyright infringement and data security risks.

To work out which countries are doomed, they looked at population age and density, the proportion of internet users, cyber security laws and cyber security and disaster risk index scores. They also looked at Google searches worldwide to find out which countries are the most concerned about the rise of artificial intelligence.

And when the data was crunched, the UK ranked very poorly, coming in at 13th on the list. The full report doesn’t specify why the UK is ranked so low, but the Daily Star has reached out to the researchers for clarification.

Above the UK is Sweden in 10th which has an AI survival score of 5.29, while Germany, Japan and Ireland make up ninth, eighth and seventh respectively. In sixth is Portugal, while Norway finishes in fifth – with Turkey in fourth, the United States in third and Canada in second.

Topping the list – and best equipped to survive an AI takeover is France with a survival score of 7.10.

A spokesman said: “The nation has the most cyber security legislation, with 11 laws, ranking first for the factor. This means it has a legal framework that can swiftly deal with problematic AI that could lead to a takeover.

“France also shares fifth place in terms of its proportion of people using the internet at only 85%. This makes the country less at risk of rogue AI using the internet to hack computers and spread itself throughout the country.

“The more we rely on AI, the greater its chance to take control. So automation, especially when it comes to jobs, is one of the key features of the AI takeover. France ranks just outside the top five for non-AI jobs at 108 per 100,000 people, making it relatively safe from automation.”
