Man charged with tried homicide after officer ‘chased with chainsaw’

A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after an officer was ‘chased down the road with a chainsaw’ following a police car crash which left two injured.

Liridon Kastrati, 30, is also accused of a number of road traffic offences following a car crash on Glasgow Road in Paisley, Renfrewshire, yesterday afternoon.

Dramatic footage posted on social media showed one of the cops being chased down the street by a man wielding a chainsaw.

Glasgow Road was closed between Buchlyvie Road and Allanton Avenue for a number of hours, but has since reopened.

Kastrati made no plea and has been committed for further examination.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court again in eight days time.

Footage of the scene showed a man dressed in a grey top and black trousers yelling as he allegedly sprinted towards an officer, while wielding a large weapon.

Around a dozen officers swarmed to the road with images from the scene showing a police patrol car crashed into the wall of a nearby house after an alleged collision between motors during the chase. 

A dark coloured Volkswagen is also seen with its front badly damaged.

The smash saw the two injured officers requiring treatment from paramedics. 

Police have since assured concerned residents that there is not wider risk to the public and there have been no other injuries reported.

Other footage shows police officers scrambling to the scene as they restrain an individual on the pavement with the help of have-ago-heroes who were passing by.

A number of officers were seen bundling a person to the floor before more officers sprint to their aid. 

Plain clothed officers also then emerge to help their colleagues at the scene outside a dental surgery.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said earlier: ‘A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged following a disturbance involving a weapon, and a collision on Glasgow Road in Paisley.

‘Two officers were injured and were treated by paramedics.

‘The 30-yr-old man is due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Tuesday, May 7.’

‘It’s a busy road but it’s the first time I’ve seen the likes of this,’ one local told the Scottish Sun.

‘Thankfully no one appears to have been seriously hurt which is the main thing.’ 

A statement from Police Scotland yesterday said: ‘Around 1pm on Monday, 6 May, 2024, a disturbance involving a weapon occurred following a collision involving a car and a stationary police vehicle on Glasgow Road in Paisley.

‘There is no wider risk to the public and officers remain at the scene while enquires are ongoing.

‘Glasgow Road is closed between Buchlyvie Road and Allanton Avenue. Drivers are asked to avoid the area and use an alternative route.’
