‘Stoke was a s*** place to work’ says Premier League cult hero as Q&A turns bitter

Saido Berahino invited his 100,000-plus social media followers to ask him questions about his time at Stoke City – and it quickly backfired.

Berahino, 30, was asked about his disappointing stint with the Potters, and he had a blunt response. Berahino’s move from West Brom to Stoke in January 2017 for around £12million marked a significant turning point in his career.

Once hailed as a promising talent for English football, Berahino had lost his way at the Hawthorns. His impressive 14-goal haul in the 2014/15 Premier League season dwindled to just four the following term, and by the time Mark Hughes and Stoke City showed interest, he was barely playing.

Despite being given ample time and support to realise his potential at Stoke, Berahino failed to score over the next season and a half, during which time the club was relegated from the top flight.

With only three goals in 51 league appearances to his name, he was shipped off for spells with Zulte Waregem and Charleroi in Belgium, Sheffield Wednesday in League One, and AEL Limassol in Cyprus, reports Stoke on Trent Live.

Saido Berahino slammed his time at Stoke in the social media Q&A

When asked what went wrong at Stoke, Berahino responded to one fan with a simple “Everything.” To another fan who asked ‘why were you s*** at Stoke?”, he replied “Was a s*** place to work honestly,” and to yet another, he referred to the club as a “bunch of clowns”.

When asked what he would do differently if given the chance to revisit his time at Stoke, he responded: “Sign a better back room staff and coach… I wasn’t awful actually. Clearly I wasn’t getting any support from you!”

His comments sparked reactions from Stoke fans who had backed him and the club during those tumultuous two-and-a-half years, including a video of supporters chanting his name. One fan responded: “Yeah, a reported £78k a week on a five and a half year deal must have been absolutely dreadful. Don’t know how you put up with it.”

However, the harshest response likely came in response to his post about Stoke being a difficult place to work. One fan retorted with a screenshot of Berahino’s post-West Brom CV – where he didn’t set the world alight either – asking: “Is that the same excuse for all these clubs as well?”
