The Netflix series ‘Beckham’, which launched last October, a detailed look at the Manchester United icon’s career both on and off the field and focuses heavily on his relationship with Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham

However, it took the soccer legend more than one watch to enjoy the series with his wife Victoria playing a major role in changing his mind.

‘I planned to watch it one morning, just myself with a big screen and just to write notes,’ Beckham explained during his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live Wednesday night.

‘That morning, I really didn’t like it. I didn’t enjoy watching it.’

After the docuseries flopped at Beckham’s own box office, he decided he required his wife’s expert opinion.

‘I’d planned to let my wife watch it for the first time at the premier but I had to change that and get her to watch it with me that evening,’ he continued.

‘We sat in bed with an iPad and watched two hours of rough edit. We got to the end of it and we looked at each other and we were so emotional. We laughed, we cried, we were tired because we’d done so much in that 27 years.

‘That really was the moment when I fell in love with the documentary because I knew she loved it and that meant more to me.’

Beckham also revealed that he had initially been approached about filming a documentary when he first retired in May 2013 but he explained that he wasn’t ready to reflect on his career at the time.

Instead, he opted to wait until 2023 to release the series to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of his decision to hang up his boots.

The four-part documentary provided an intimate insight into the high-profile couple’s marriage and early romance, their family life, Beckham’s affair with Rebecca Loos as well as charting his footballing career.

The celebrity couple, who met in 1997 after ‘Posh Spice’ attended one of his Manchester United matches with Mel C, announced to the public that they were engaged a year later and have been married since July 1999.

As they were both high-profile celebrities before dating, ‘Posh and Becks’ generated extreme levels of publicity and media attention, and it’s claimed this angered then-United manager Alex Ferguson during the early stages of their relationship.

Despite Beckham’s initial reluctance, the documentary proved to be a hit with fans, amassing a record breaking 3.8million viewers during its premiere week.

According to the Broadcasters Audience Research Board (BARB), the first episode saw 3,813,100 fans tune in.

The second instalment was also a success reaching 2,868,800 viewers by the week ending October 8.

Beckham has been the streaming service’s topped watched show for two weeks now, with 11,600,000 fans watching globally, according to Netflix’s own data.
