Huge Bermudan storm bringing 55mph winds to UK as climate maps flip blue

Get ready for a wild ride as a monstrous storm is brewing over Bermuda before it’s set to smash into the UK, bringing an end to our mini heatwave. Weather boffins have spotted the beast on the charts, and it’s looking like a blue beast with winds that could top a whopping 55mph.

Brits have been basking in some lush sunshine with the mercury set to soar to a sizzling 26C this Saturday on what will be the hottest day of the year. But hold onto your hats, because the weather wizards are predicting a switcheroo to “unsettled” skies next week. The radar’s lit up with a stonking great thunderstorm charging towards us from across the pond.

This bad boy is due to crash our party on Tuesday 14 May, drenching us with a deluge and blasting the west coast with gusts that’ll ruffle more than just a few feathers.

The Met Office has clocked this incoming low-pressure troublemaker too, and they reckon things will start going pear-shaped from Sunday. Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wisson’s giving us the heads up: “Many places will start fine and warm on Sunday, though it is likely to become cloudier from the west or southwest during the day. This will be accompanied by scattered showers, which could be heavy with thunder.”

“On Monday we’re likely to see more widespread and longer-lived spells of rain, some of which will be heavy and thundery. This will also lead to a much cooler feel to the day.”

In the meantime, Brits should make sure they have enough suncream stored up – as UV levels are expected to be high throughout the weekend. From Friday to Sunday, the forecaster UV level is at 6 in London and the south of England, which is regarded as “high exposure”.

Moderate exposure is forecast in northern England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Met Office said on X (formerly Twitter) that members of the public should “make sure you stay protected whilst out enjoying the sun”, with hayfever patients also warned to prepare for increased amounts of airborne pollen.
