A British beach has been closed as a bomb squad are called in following reports of a “loud explosion” in the area.

An A-Road leading to Seaham Beach remains closed with the Ministry of Defence’s bomb squad now on location following reports of an unexploded bomb found on the beach.

Durham Police confirmed the A182 was closed between Noses Point car park and Byron Place shopping centre after a loud explosion was heard in Seaham. It is believed the unexploded bomb has been successfully detonated underwater.

The road has since been reopened with Durham Police earlier confirming HM Coastguard was monitoring the device which was reported today. A statement from Durham Police read: “The A182 at Seaham, between Noses Point car park and Byron Place shopping centre is currently closed again.

“This is in relation to an incident being managed by HM Coastguard on the beach following the discovery of some unexploded ordnance.

“An MOD Explosive Ordnance Disposal team is currently at the location and it is expected that the item will be dealt with appropriately underwater within the next hour – this will result in a loud explosion being heard locally.”

An update from Durham Police confirmed: “The item has now been safely disposed of and the road and car park are now open.” It comes after a bomb disposal in Great Yarmouth earlier this year.

Hundreds of families were evacuated from their homes at the time of the discovery, with MoD experts drafted in to transport the bomb out into the ocean where it was safely detonated.

Emergency services had previously built huge sand walls around the bomb in order to make the area safe, and no-one was hurt following the unplanned detonation.
