UK to brace for thunderstorms inflicting ‘extreme energy cuts’ and different ‘hazards’

The Met Office has warned powerful thunderstorms and downpours will hit the UK on Sunday, issuing several yellow weather warnings at the same time.

Yet another nationwide “mini-summer” will see a short spurt of sweltering temperatures evolve into miserable weather. After a sunny weekend reaching highs of 24 degrees, thunderstorms are predicted to hit the UK on Sunday, continuing into Monday morning.

Western and central areas of the country will experience the worst of the cloudburst, facing “severe power cuts” according to the Met Office.

The weather warnings will remain in place until around 4am on Monday morning, by which time, the bad weather will have moved to the North of the country.

The Met Office commented: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out late Sunday morning and early Sunday afternoon, moving steadily north whilst growing into larger areas of rain before clearing the area.

“Some intense downpours are possible in a few places, giving up to 30 mm in less than hour and perhaps 40-50 mm over two to three hours leading to surface water flooding. Hail, frequent lightning strikes and strong wind gusts will be additional localised hazards.”

This week’s hot weather has built up to massive thunderstorms, posing a risk of flooding and power cuts

Brits are also being warned that sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and potential road closures. In areas were lightning strikes occur, inhabitants should plan for the chance of delays and public transport cancellations.

As well as power cuts, the severe weather may cause loss of service to homes and businesses, or damage to buildings.
