Wetherspoons creates new £5m ‘Super Spoons’ with Britain’s largest beer backyard

Wetherspoons is injecting a staggering sum of money into creating a jacked-up mega pub that will boast Britain’s biggest beer garden.

The no-frills budget chain of boozers is set to invest £5million into creating a Super Spoons, which will be everything a Spoons should be, and then some.

The mega-establishment will take over The Mile Castle in Newcastle, which already operates as a Wetherspoons. The redevelopment will see the site double in size, as Britain’s biggest beer garden and a 26-room hotel are added, reports The Sun.

The beer garden will take up 3,000 square foot of outdoor space.

The development starts next week, from Monday, May 13. The pub will close from June 24 and reopen on September 3.

It’s expected the hotel will be up and running in November.

The paper reports that the Super Spoons idea has been in the works since 2018, but Covid thwarted progress.

The refurbishment will include new carpet, better lighting, creating a cellar and extending the bar on the third floor.

The hotel’s rooms will be en-suites, two of which designed specifically for guests with disabilities.

It’s expected the Super Spoons will create 70 new full and part-time jobs, which are in addition to the 130 staff currently employed.

This follows the news that Wetherspoons is in the ‘Champions League’ of toilet cleanliness, with the chain’s pristine bogs earning praise for their condition.

Daily Star reports that Silver, gold, platinum, platinum plus and diamond classifications in The Loo of the Year awards were presented to venues with “the highest standards of cleaning” following thousands of unannounced inspections in establishments across the UK.

The beloved chain has since picked their pristine lavatories and issued just 11 diamond awards to 809 venues across the UK. A further 120 platinum plus awards were issued, as well as 554 platinum and 122 gold awards.
