‘I took image at haunted jail however did not spot spooky element till I received dwelling’

A woman was left too “scared” to return to an infamous haunted jail after noticing something in a photo she took during her visit.

Bodmin Jail in Cornwall was closed down in 1927 and is now a tourist hotpot with ghost tours and a hotel, attracting paranormal investigators hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the many spirits that supposedly haunt it.

Many of the ghosts are said to be former prisoners who were executed at the jail down the years and still roam its gloomy corridors and cells. The site was even featured on an episode of Most Haunted.

Tania Woods recently shared an image she took there, during a visit 12 years ago, to a ghost sightings Facebook group. She said she noticed a ghostly figure in the image when she got home and showed it to staff, who then offered her a “free overnight stay with a medium for the photo”.

Despite not noticing the apparition in the top right of the image when she was at Bodmin Jail, Tania told us she “felt an overwhelming feeling of sadness” when she ventured through the cells. She also felt “ice cold” in certain places, whereas her family “said they all felt quite warm”.

Tania said: “I didn’t realise I’d caught the ghost until I got home, I was living in Cornwall at the time. I contacted them and went back with my photo. The director at the time said this spirit had been caught before by a few other people.”

The site’s director said this spirit had been spotted before, according to Tania

Tania admitted she eventually “chickened out” of the complimentary overnight stay with a medium as she was “scared” and thought “something bad was going to happen”.

According to Haunted Britain, visitors to Bodmin Jail report being “overcome by feelings of desolation and despondency as they explore its dank maze of dark corridors and claustrophobic cells”.

Among the site’s most notable ghosts is Selina Wadge, who was hanged for the murder of her son in the 19th century. Legend has it that her ghost reaches out to small children, who often ask their parents about a crying lady in a long dress.
