Liverpool eye Anthony Gordon switch with key benefit to lure Newcastle star

Liverpool are interested in signing Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon.

The England international, 23, has enjoyed a superb first season at St James Park and is expected to be part of Gareth Southgate’s squad at the European Championships this summer. And that consistent excellence on the wing for Eddie Howe’s outfit has caught the attention of Liverpool’s scouting unit as they draw up a list of potential targets for the post-Jurgen Klopp era.

Gordon is near the top of it but the Geordies, of course, will be in no mood to sell their star performer, who only joined them last August in a £45million switch from Everton. However, the loaded Saudi-owned club are expected to off-load at least one, possibly two, leading players in the close season in order to stay the right side of Financial Fair Play rules.

Swedish hitman Alexander Isak has been heavily linked with a big-money move to Arsenal as has Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. However, Gordon being tracked by Liverpool is a new development – and will be an unwelcome one as far as Newcastle boss Howe is concerned.

Gordon has scored 10 league goals and created a further 10 following his arrival and has become a firm favourite with the Toon army. He was recently been named the club’s Player of the Season.

It would take an offer of close to £100m from the Reds to seriously test Newcastle’s resolve to keep hold of the influential playmaker. Whether the Merseysiders, who are set to appoint Dutchman Arne Slot as departing Klopp’s successor, will go that high on one single target this remains to be seen.

But not in doubt is that they view Gordon, capped twice by England, as the best option on the flanks as they look to strengthen a squad that ran out of steam during the title run-in. However, the fact the Magpies were sitting sixth in the table coming into the weekend – and seem certain to be in Europe again next season – should help them in the fight to hang onto Gordon – for now at least.

Despite rising through the Goodison Park youth ranks, Gordon is actually a lifelong Liverpool fan, having been with them before his release and switch across the divide at the age of 11.
