Football followers shocked as ex-Prem wonderkid wins promotion to National League

Football fans were left shocked when a name from the past won promotion to the National League with Braintree.

Freddie Sears was part of Braintree’s 4-3 extra-time victory over Worthing earlier this month. Sears, 34, was once of the books of Premier League side West Ham – where he was tipped for the very top.

Sears scored for the Hammers on his Premier League debut way back in 2008 – netting a late winner against Blackburn Rovers. However, his career at the Hammers would petter out – eventually leaving in 2012 after 12 years at the club.

Sears was a hot-topic at the London Stadium over the weekend as 19-year-old George Earthy made his return to the Hammers side, scoring with his first touch. One fan said: “It had the same vibes as when Freddie Sears scored against Blackburn all those years go!”

“Keep hold of Earthy and nurture him… I remember Freddie Sears a few years back, I was so hopeful for him and he just fizzled away,” a second replied. And another added: “Bring him through slowly, this was all said about Freddie Sears and he never made the grade!”
