Leading cyclists taken out by automotive throughout nationwide champs – however one nonetheless wins
Two female cyclists escaped serious harm despite being hit by a car during the French Junior Road Race Championship.
Amandine Muller and Célia Gery had escaped up the road during the short 81km race to crown France’s best young rider. The pair were seemingly cruising to first and second when disaster struck with 31km still left to race.
Gery’s team car had pulled up alongside the Frenchwoman to provide her with food and water – but the driver had taken his eyes off the road to discuss tactics with Gery. As a result, he ploughed into the back of Muller, sending her sprawling on the ground.

Gery couldn’t avoid Muller’s prone body, and she went flying over the top of her rival. Amazingly, both escaped the incident unharmed and were still able to claim first and second.
Muller wasn’t able to follow Gery up the short and steep Roggenberg, losing out on gold. Muller said, holding back her tears: “I tried to keep up at the end of the last lap, but it was quite complicated.”

The crash went viral on social media – where it was picked up by Adam Hansen, the president of the CPA (Cyclistes Professionnels Associes): “We are so greatful Amandine fell on the left side and not the right, as the car couldn’t stop fast enough and it could have been fatal for her.
“We will watch this final outcome of the DS very closely. I hope whatever the outcome is, he realises a car can be a weapon in the wrong hands.”
Julien Guiborel, the team director involved in the incident, admitted he regretted the incident: “Personally, it takes away from the joy of the victory. I would have felt even worse if Amandine hadn’t finished second. I can’t apologise enough to both of them.”
