Merson makes ‘little cockrel’ Spurs tattoo vow if they assist Arsenal vs Man City

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has promised to get a Tottenham tattoo if Spurs get a positive result against Manchester City.

The Gunners need to rely on their north London rivals as they look to lift their first Premier League title since 2004. Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand over Mikel Arteta’s team and will reclaim top spot if they win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday night.

Sunday’s win at Manchester United has ensured Arsenal will take the title fight to the final day, regardless of the result, but a favour from their bitter foes would be huge in the meantime. Arteta’s side will play their final game of the campaign at home to Everton next Sunday, with City kicking off at home to West Ham at the same time.

England midfielder turned Sky Sports pundit Merson believes the Citizens will come out on top because he isn’t banking on struggling Spurs – who beat Burnley at the weekend but in the last month have been thrashed by Liverpool, comfortably dispatched by Chelsea, conceded three goals in a defeat to Arsenal and hammered by Newcastle – to do them any favours.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the Gunners 1-0 victory at Old Trafford, he said: “Arsenal are probably going to finish second. If you are relying on Tottenham to win a football match or draw a football match, no. If they win that, I’ll have a Tottenham tattoo.”

Asked by Sky Sports presenter David Jones where he would get the ink, Merson replied: “Where you can’t see it!”

Merson went on to explain how he felt Champions League chasing Spurs would have greater motivation if Aston Villa lose to Liverpool on Monday night,” reports Football London. He said: “If Villa got beat tomorrow by two or three, then all of a sudden that goal difference changes a bit.

“If they lost their next two games by two clear goals, I am not talking about the extraordinary here, that’s four goals, then all of a sudden Tottenham could get a draw against Man City and I am having a tattoo, and then they go and put six past Sheffield United.”

“It all goes down to Tuesday, I am starting to want Arsenal not to win it now. It would be the little cockerel on the ball, but I will have it. I will have it!”

Currently, Spurs finds themselves at the fifth spot in the Premier League standings, being just four points shy of catching up with Villa, who claim the fourth position and the last Champions League qualification slot.
