Teacher who ‘had schoolboy’s child’ breaks down saying child woman was ‘taken away’

A teacher accused of sleeping with two teenage boys has broken down admitting that her baby girl was “taken away”.

Rebecca Joynes, 30, was in tears as she appeared at Manchester Crown Court. She told jurors that her child, which had allegedly been fathered by one of the teenagers, was “taken” from her “24 hours after being born.”

She now says she sees the child “three times a week for three hours”. She denies all six counts of sexual activity with two teenagers.

Her allegations centre around actions with two teenage boys she encountered while she worked at a school in Greater Manchester.

She allegedly groomed one of the boys with a shopping trip to the Trafford Shopping Centre before having sex with them, jurors heard. Meanwhile, the other boy allegedly got her pregnant.

She has now given evidence for the first time, where she denied having sex with either of the boys while they were underage. According to Manchester Evening News, she said that Boy A was “pushing boundaries”.

She claimed that Boy A had repeatedly asked for her number and she gave him nine digits of it before he guessed the last two. She admitted to talking to him over message the next day.

She said the Trafford Shopping Centre trip came about when he commented “When are you going to take me then?” to a Snapchat story of her there. The court heard that it was agreed that he would stay at hers if they got back late because he was concerned he would get in trouble with his parents. “At the time I agreed, and we said if we were late back, he would have to stay at mine,” she said.

The following day, she is understood to have bought him a £345 Gucci belt from Selfridges.

“I shouldn’t have done this, but I just agreed and bought the belt and I should never have done that,” she added. She also claimed that he later asked her how many people she had slept with.

“I thought it was a strange question and said that, and then said ‘probably not as many as you,’” she told jurors. “I thought he obviously thought something was going to happen and we had a discussion that there was nothing going to happen.”

She said she offered to take him home. He declined and said he could sleep on the sofa. Asked why his DNA was found on her bedsheet, she said: “It definitely wasn’t with me. At some point he must have gone into my bedroom and something happened.”

“Is there anything about that period you would change?” Mr O’Brien asked.

“Everything,” Ms Joynes answered emotionally, wiping a tear from her face. “As a teacher I should have never engaged in phone contact… I should have never taken him to the Trafford Centre and definitely not let him into my apartment.”

Of her relationship with Boy B, she claimed that her relationship with him had not started until after he had left school and upon suspension from her job while on bail while police investigated.

She gave birth in January of this year, but the court heard that following an emergency court hearing the child was taken away.

Sobbing in the witness box she said: “24 hours after she had been born. At the moment I have contact with her three times a week for three hours and that’s it.”

Ms Joynes, of Pensby Road, Wirral, denies two counts of sexual activity with Boy A; two counts of sexual activity with Boy B; and two counts of sexual activity with Boy B while being a person in a position of trust.

The trial continues.
