New ChatGPT voice has individuals scorching beneath the collar because it’s ‘weirdly seductive’

OpenAI’s new ChatGPT voice has caused a stir on social media, with some describing it as “weirdly seductive”.

Hello GPT-4o was announced yesterday (Monday, May 13), with its parent tech company proudly labelling it “our new flagship model that can reason across audio, vision, and text in real time.” Some reckon the popular chatbot’s new voice sounds a lot like Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson in her role in the 2013 romantic sci-fi flick, Her.

In a live demonstration of the release, OpenAI engineers and the firm’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Mira Murati showed off the software’s capabilities using a mobile phone.

They encouraged it to be “more expressive” while making up its own bedtime story, before asking it to switch to a robotic voice. The team then asked GPT-4o to end the story by singing.

Following the event, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman cryptically posted a single-word status on X (formerly Twitter) reading: “Her.” He has previously admitted the film – which sees Johansson play the artificially intelligent virtual assistant Samantha – is his favourite.

And fellow X users were also quick to comment. One posted a meme showing Johansson saying: “And now I’m going to get weirdly seductive for no apparent reason.” They captioned it: “GPT-40 literally any request at all.”

Another joked: “OK GPT-4o, same answer but please sound less horny.” Meanwhile a third quipped: “OK GPT-4o I’m at home now, you can turn the horny to 11 again.”

A fourth penned: “I’m ready for all of this, bring on the cringe maxxing bedtime stories.” And a fifth laughed: “The ‘o’ [in GPT-4o] obviously stands for orgasm.”

Even X owner and CEO Elon Musk had something to say. He wrote: “Something off about the voice and intonation. Reminded me of Scarlett’s Under Your Skin movie.”

OpenAI added of its latest product: “[GPT-4o] can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, which is similar to in a conversation.

“It matches GPT-4 Turbo performance on text in English and code, with significant improvement on text in non-English languages, while also being much faster and 50% cheaper in the API. GPT-4o is especially better at vision and audio understanding compared to existing models.”

Her sees Johansson’s character develop a romantic relationship with Theodore Twombly – played by Joaquin Phoenix. It was written and directed by Spike Jonze.
