Rory McIlroy and spouse Erica Stoll ‘file for divorce’ on eve of PGA Championship

Golfing superstar Rory McIlroy has reportedly filed for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll, marking the end of their 12-year relationship. The news comes just before the US PGA Championship, where McIlroy is a favourite to win.

The 35 year old Northern Irishman submitted the divorce papers in Florida on Monday, as reported by TMZ Sports. The couple first crossed paths in 2014, two years after their initial meeting.

Their first encounter was at the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club in Illinois, where Stoll was working. She came to McIlroy’s rescue when he nearly missed his tee time due to an alarm mishap, arranging a police escort for him.

At the time, McIlroy was engaged to tennis ace Caroline Wozniacki, but following their split, he kindled a romance with Stoll.

The pair exchanged vows in 2017 and share a daughter, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, born in 2020, reports the Mirror.

The announcement of their separation arrives just two days ahead of the PGA Championship at Valhalla, Kentucky. McIlroy, who has been in top form recently, is among the favourites to clinch the Wannamaker Trophy.
