Postecoglou goals cryptic dig at ‘fragile foundations’ after Spurs loss to City

Ange Postecoglou launched a scathing attack on ‘fragile’ Tottenham after suffering a 2-0 loss against Manchester City.

SpursChampions League ambitions were ended as two goals from Erling Haaland secured the win for the visitors, bringing them one step closer to the Premier League title. But the story of the night was how many Spurs fans wanted their team to lose in order to prevent bitter rivals Arsenal lifting the trophy – which made for a subdued and at times unsupportive atmosphere in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Postecoglou was evidently frustrated and the Australian boss showed as much in a fiery post-match press conference, with vague comments about his displeasure and an apparent warning that major changes are on the cards for Spurs as his inaugural season as boss nears its end.

“The foundations are really fragile,” Postecoglou said. “The last 48 hours have shown me that. It’s inside the club, outside the club,” reports the Express.

Spurs knew a triumph over City would have revived their hopes for a top-four finish, but it also would have handed North London rivals rivals Arsenal the advantage in the title race going into the final day of the season. When Haaland’s late penalty took the pressure off City and pretty much sealed the three points, Spurs fans started chanting “Are you watching Arsenal?”

These chants, however, didn’t impress Postecoglou who had previously emphasised he was more focused on winning than anything else. “Not interested mate, I don’t care, I just want to build a winning team,” was his response when asked about his thoughts regarding the chants.

In a chat with BBC, when queried on how his squad compares to reigning champions City, Postecoglou confessed: “Nothing earth shattering that I didn’t know before the game. We still have some work to do. We need to do some work to catch up.”

The coach added, visibly disappointed, “We lost the game so I am disappointed. [Any pride to take? ] Not right now because we have lost. We will assess the season, still one more game to go, one more game against Sheffield United and we need to make sure we win. I think wherever you finish is a fair reflection of where you are at.”
